River Swim

This is a river near Sera monastery where we went for a swim. With us is Geshela's friend Tenzin, who is offering us a place to stay when we arrive in Dharamasala.

Yes - we went to thew Ganges River at the beginning of our trip when we were in Varanasi. We took a boatride out on the water and watched hundreds of Hundu Indians bathe in it and make offerings. We also saw people burning thier dead in fires by the river. Early in our blog (if you scroll down a bit) we put photos of a nightime celebration at the Ganga. Just recently there was a gathering to the Ganges called the Kumba Mela that happens only once every twelve years and is supposed to be the biggest gathering of human beings on the planet :-)

Wow biggest gathering of human beings on the planet!! Yeah mimi told me that you guys were to disgusted by the river to take a bath in it or swim in it, i can understand why it way polluted! One of my class mates Roshni is from India and she said her dad bathed in it i would probably go as far as putting my foot in but that's it :-) What did you do on the boat ride on the river, was it part of the teachings or did you do it just for the heck of it??

We just went to the Ganges as tourists. We didn't even touch our toes in it though- you're braver than us! But when we got to the middle of the river in our boat ride, we did set a plate with a flower and a candle into the river as many of the Hindus do to bring good fortune :-)
